Conficker hits Manchester police

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been cut off from a national criminal database for more than three days because of Conficker infection.

The worm quickly spread through the force, leading to the decision to cut off the GMP's access to the Police National Computer (PNC). Officers had to ask neighboring forces to carry out national checks on names and vehicles. According to the police, the virus was not destructive and no data had been lost.

Conficker is believed to have infected up to 15 million computers around the world.
