The RPD technology

VirusBuster products integrate Commtouch's pre-emptive virus (Zero Hour Virus Protection (ZH)) and spam (Extended Spam Protection (ESP)) protection modules based on the innovative RPD technology, which - as a signature-less solution - provides enhanced detection.

ZH and ESP modules don't need a virus or spam database to detect malwares delivered by e-mail, but they detect the attacking/spreading wave itself connecting and communicating permanently to a central server. The server analyzes e-mail traffic of the Internet, based on comprehensive information collected from numerous locations of the world. The filter ranks the mails according to the server information so it can reveal the attacks or spam mails some minutes after they have been started and block these e-mails long before the first virus or spam database updates are released which can take several hours sometimes.

Zero Hour Virus Protection

It is effective approach to respond to new outbreaks, protecting users hours before first signatures are released.

Security experts agree that signature-less protection is an essential complement to traditional AV technologies. By proactively scanning the Internet and identifying massive outbreaks as soon as they emerge, Commtouch's Zero-Hour Solution provides just that: effective signature-independent protection. The technology closes the early-hour vulnerability gap during which millions of users are infected. Defined by IDC as the "quickest approach to respond to new outbreaks," the Commtouch solution protects users hours before signatures are released. It also helps accelerate the signature-making process, by providing AV partners immediate alerts of emerging viruses.

Key benefits:

  • It is effective in the early phase of attacks: protects in a few minutes after the attack has started. Releases of virus or spam database updates for traditional virus/spam scan engines can take several hours. Pre-emptive defense: blocks known and unknown malwares, spams by detecting attack waves.
Outstanding detection rate: detects 95 percent of spam mails or e-mails that contains malware in itself, without using any other "traditional" virus or spam protection methods.
    Fully automatic: no maintenance needed.

    Extended Spam Protection

Commtouch's RPD technology detects massive email outbreaks within seconds or minutes of their distribution over the Internet - immediately blocking mass-mailed messages. RPD's long lasting effectiveness in anti-spam applications has been proven in independent evaluations by groups such as Osterman Research.

RPD focuses on the most fundamental characteristic of spam - its mass distribution over the Internet. Focusing on the bulk nature of messages, rather than on their individual content, provides key benefits:

  • Full effectiveness against spam in any language. Real-time blocking of new spam outbreaks.
    Immunity to manipulations by spammers.
    Extremely low false positive rates.
